I'm super curious to hear examples of folks who, as non-professional politicians, learned the language and effected change. Are there folks that come to mind? I would devour a whole other blog post on that.

By learning the language, one professionalizes. I think a common element in many of these stories is that you generally have to leave behind your "outsider" or "non-professional" adjectives, even if you retain them aesthetically.

I'll keep this in mind for a future post! An interesting example is Al Smith, New York State's erstwhile governor who laid the template for FDR's New Deal. Smith was from the five boroughs, but grew up completely outside of privilege and politics. But he learned!
